Their story

Basbas comes from Ibiza, in Spain's Balearic Islands, where herbal liqueurs known as hierbas have been made for centuries. The style is often traced to monks in northeastern Spain in the 1400s, and on the islands it became a household tradition passed down through families.

Paul Geller fell for the islands and their customs and started Holy Seed Beverage Group in 2018 to bring one of these recipes to a wider audience. Basbas arrived in the United States in 2022, first in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami.

How it's made

More than a dozen herbs, farmed and foraged on the island, go into the blend, with notes like anise, rosemary, juniper, chamomile, and sage. The botanicals macerate for close to a year, with ingredients added and removed at set points, and the liqueur is finished at about 25 percent alcohol.

Basbas is a family recipe that has remained the same for generations.

Why we carry them

We like Basbas over ice with a splash of soda as an easy aperitif. It is gentler than most herbal liqueurs, so it works well before dinner.
