Their story
Avery and Janet Glasser started Bittermens in 2007 while living in San Francisco, after bartenders there and in New York and Boston took to their homemade bitters. Once they had their federal permits, they began production in 2010 in a shared kitchen in Somerville, Massachusetts.
The company has moved several times since, to Brooklyn in 2011, to the New Orleans area in 2013 and to Portland, Oregon, in 2016. In 2017 the Sazerac Company bought a significant stake in the business.
How it's made
Bittermens makes bitters as non-beverage alcohol products, steeping botanicals into concentrated flavors like Xocolatl Mole, Hopped Grapefruit and 'Elemakule Tiki. The range has grown to include bitter liqueurs, a Swedish-style wormwood schnapps, shrubs and syrups.
Our featured pick
Hellfire Habanero Bitters (5OZ)
$20.00
Bittermens has fortified the shrub with alcohol (to better extract the flavours from the spices) and made it much more concentrated, so you only need to use drops instead of ounces to get the desired.

Why we carry them
A few dashes of Xocolatl Mole can change a Manhattan in the best way. We think every home bar should have a bottle or two.
