Their story

Black Hammer Brewing was the work of Jim Furman, a chemical engineer and award-winning homebrewer, and co-owner K. Albert Jackey, who met at a family reunion. Furman founded the company in 2012 as Hammer Brewing, then added "Black" as a nod to Burning Man's Black Rock City, where he picked up the nickname Hammer.

The taproom opened in 2015 at 544 Bryant Street in SoMa, in a former printing shop, and later added a beer garden in the Castro. The beer garden closed in October 2025, and the company wound down and closed its SoMa home in April 2026.

How it's made

Furman focused on English-style ales and German-style lagers, leaning on malt rather than heavy hops so the beers stayed balanced and drinkable. Early pours included an Oktoberfest, an English bitter, a blueberry wit and a kolsch.

We are seriously in love with San Francisco, and can't wait to give back.
Jim Furman, founder and brewmaster, to Hoodline (2015)

Why we carry them

Black Hammer was a true San Francisco neighbor, and we are sorry to see it go. If you spot any remaining cans, the balanced, malty beers are worth a try.
