Their story

Domaine Sautereau is a family estate in Crézancy, a village just outside Sancerre in the eastern Loire Valley. David Sautereau is the tenth generation of his family to make wine here, and he works the domaine alongside his parents.

Before coming home, David studied winemaking in Burgundy and Champagne and took on internships in Switzerland, California and Australia. He brought in his first Sancerre harvest in 1997, with the goal of carrying the family's know-how forward.

Today the estate covers about 22 hectares across Crézancy, Bué and Sancerre, roughly two-thirds Sauvignon Blanc and one-third Pinot Noir, and it has recently earned organic certification.

How it's made

The family farms organically across three Sancerre soil types: caillottes (small stones over limestone), Kimmeridgian marl, and the shell-rich terres blanches. Each soil adds its own note to the whites, from finesse to roundness to aromatic length. The estate makes Sancerre blanc, rosé and rouge.

Why we carry them

We like Sautereau for classic, honest Sancerre from a family that has been at it for ten generations. Try the blanc with fresh goat cheese.
