Their story

Sébastien David farms Cabernet Franc in Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, in the Touraine stretch of the Loire Valley. His family has made wine in the village since 1634, and his grandfather helped establish the appellation in 1937.

Sébastien is the fifteenth generation and made his first vintage in 1999. Over time he moved the vines from organic to biodynamic farming and has started experimenting with permaculture.

His refusal to add any sulfur has at times put him at odds with French authorities, but he has stayed with it, and his wines are now a reference point for natural Loire reds.

How it's made

About 15 hectares of Cabernet Franc, with vines from roughly 35 to 100 years old, are farmed biodynamically and picked by hand. Fermentation relies on native yeasts, nothing is fined or filtered, and no sulfur is added at any stage. The wines age in terracotta amphorae, concrete eggs and open vats.

Why we carry them

We love these wines for how pure and lively Cabernet Franc tastes with nothing added. Hurluberlu is a great one to chill slightly and share.
