Their story

FAIR began with Alexandre Koiransky, a former cognac salesman who grew uneasy selling expensive bottles in a trade that did little for the farmers behind them. In 2009 he and his friend Jean-Francois Daniel set out to build a spirits company around Fair Trade sourcing.

Their first bottle was a vodka distilled from quinoa grown by a cooperative in Bolivia, chosen partly because common vodka bases like wheat and potatoes could not be Fair Trade certified. The range has since grown to include gin, rum and a coffee liqueur, each built around a certified crop from a different part of the world.

The spirits are made in France, with production rooted in the Cognac region, and the brand is sold in more than 20 countries.

How it's made

Each spirit starts with a Fair Trade ingredient: Bolivian quinoa for the vodka, juniper from Uzbekistan for the gin, sugar cane from Belize for the rum and Mexican coffee for the liqueur. Under Fair Trade rules the company pays growers a premium and returns part of its revenue to community projects. Distillation takes place in France.

My idea was to bring some meaning to the world of spirits

Why we carry them

We like FAIR for proving that a clean, well-made spirit can also pay its farmers properly. The quinoa vodka is a good place to start.
