Their story
The Ferrando family has made wine in the Canavese, the far northwest corner of Piedmont near the Valle d'Aosta, since 1900. Luigi Ferrando leads the estate with his sons: Roberto runs the winery and Andrea runs the family wine shop in Ivrea.
Luigi is known for working with other growers and researchers to protect the area's local grapes and traditions, and the family has become closely tied to the small mountain appellation of Carema.
How it's made
Nebbiolo grows on steep stone terraces in Carema's mountain amphitheater, while Erbaluce comes from lower hills and plains around Caluso. Erbaluce, a white grape found only in these alpine foothills, is made in styles from dry to sparkling to late harvest.
Why we carry them
We like Ferrando for Nebbiolo with mountain freshness, a different side of the grape than Barolo. The Erbaluce is a crisp, food-friendly white worth discovering.
