Their story
The Conterno family has farmed in Piedmont since the 1700s. Giovanni Conterno ran a tavern in the early 1900s, and his son Giacomo, back from World War I, built the winery that bears his name and created Monfortino, a Barolo riserva named for their village of Monforte d'Alba.
In 1974 the next Giovanni Conterno bought the Cascina Francia vineyard in Serralunga. His son Roberto joined in 1988 and has led the estate since 2004, adding the Cerretta and Arione vineyards.
How it's made
Conterno is staunchly traditional. Cascina Francia Barolo macerates on the skins for three to four weeks and ages four years in large casks, while Monfortino, made only in great vintages, macerates up to five weeks and ages about seven years in cask.
Why we carry them
Conterno is one of the great names in Italian wine, and we are glad to have it on our shelves. These are wines to cellar and open for a special occasion.
