Their story

Hangar 1 was started in 2001 by Jörg Rupf, who founded St. George Spirits, and Ansley Coale, who handled design and marketing. The first batches were made at St. George inside a World War II-era hangar at the former Alameda Naval Air Station, which gave the vodka its name.

Proximo Spirits bought the brand in 2010. Hangar 1 later ran its own distillery and tasting room in Alameda, which closed in December 2022, and production moved to an unnamed partner distillery in the Bay Area.

How it's made

Hangar 1 blends two spirits: Viognier grapes distilled in a pot still and American wheat distilled in a column still. Flavored versions are made by infusing fresh fruit and then distilling again, a process that takes several weeks per batch.

Why we carry them

We like Hangar 1 for its Bay Area roots and the soft, floral note the Viognier brings. It works well in a vodka martini or with soda and citrus.
