Their story
House Spirits Distillery was started in Portland, Oregon by Christian Krogstad, who moved to the state in 1991 for a brewing apprenticeship and spent about a dozen years making beer before switching to spirits. That brewing background shaped much of what the distillery became.
House Spirits made its name with Aviation gin, created with bartender Ryan Magarian in 2006. The company sold the Aviation brand in 2016 while continuing to distill it in Portland for a time. Its own whiskey line, Westward, is an American single malt brewed and distilled in Portland, and the distillery also made Krogstad aquavit and Volstead vodka. In 2015 it moved into a larger distillery and tasting room in Portland's Central Eastside.
How it's made
Krogstad's years as a brewer shaped how the distillery approached its spirits, especially its Westward whiskey, an American single malt made in Portland. The lineup has also included aquavits in a Scandinavian style and Volstead vodka.

Why we carry them
We like pointing beer lovers toward this distillery's single malt, since you can taste the brewing roots. A good Pacific Northwest pick for whiskey fans.
