Their story
Idlewild is the winery of Sam Bilbro, a Sonoma County native and fourth-generation California winemaker who grew up around vineyards and cellars. Tasting Nebbiolo gave him his first deep personal connection to wine.
He started Idlewild in 2012 to make wine from California-grown grapes native to Piedmont in northern Italy. The winery is based in Healdsburg, and in 2024 it became part of Overshine Wine Company, where Bilbro serves as managing partner and oversees winemaking.
How it's made
Idlewild works with Piedmont varieties like Nebbiolo grown in California vineyards. Bilbro oversees the winemaking himself.
I was raised in a winemaking family and immersed in vineyards and cellars from a young age.
Why we carry them
We like Idlewild for showing how well Italian grapes can do in Northern California. A fun pick for Barolo fans looking for something local.
