Their story
Jacob Rieger started selling whiskey under the J. Rieger & Co. name in Kansas City in 1887, and it grew into the largest mail-order whiskey house in the country. Prohibition shut it down in 1920.
In 2014 his great-great-great-grandson Andy Rieger brought the name back with bartender Ryan Maybee, who suggested the idea. Master distiller Dave Pickerell helped develop the first whiskey. Today the company runs a large distillery and event space in Kansas City's Electric Park district.
How it's made
The Kansas City Whiskey blends whiskeys from different distilleries with a touch of sherry, a practice common in the late 1800s. The lineup also includes a bottled-in-bond straight rye, gin, vodka and Caffè Amaro.
Why we carry them
Rieger's Caffè Amaro is a great after-dinner pour, and the Kansas City Whiskey works well in a Manhattan. A good story in a glass.
