Their story
José Gourmet was started in Portugal in 2008 by designer Luís Mendonça and his friend Adriano Ribeiro, an airline pilot. Mendonça serves as art director, and the two set out to give Portuguese conservas packaging that matched the quality inside.
They invited Portuguese illustrators to design the labels, and the project has grown to include dozens of artists. Today the colorful tins are as much a collectible as a pantry item.
How it's made
The company buys directly from local fishermen and small producers along the Portuguese coast and nearby regions. The range includes sardines, mackerel, tuna, octopus, squid and cod packed in oil, plus patés, olive oils and sweets.
