Their story
Juniper Ridge started in 1998 when Hall Newbegin, a Vassar philosophy graduate, began making soap in his kitchen from plant oils and tree saps he gathered himself. He had a deep love for wild Western places, the Mojave among them.
Newbegin died in 2020, and the team carries on his work in Oakland, where everything is still made by hand. The line now covers soaps, body wash, room sprays and botanical teas such as Douglas Fir Spring Tip.
The company gives 10 percent of its profits each year to conservation groups through its Western Wilderness Defense Fund.
How it's made
Plants are harvested sustainably, and some scents come from trees cleared for fire mitigation. The team uses traditional distillation methods and no synthetic perfumes.
People think the Mojave is barren, but in reality it's the most biologically vibrant place you can imagine.
Why we carry them
We love that Juniper Ridge smells like an actual hike, not a perfume counter. The Douglas Fir tea is a nice surprise for anyone who thinks of them only as a soap maker.
