Their story
Kern River Brewing opened in 2006 in Kernville, a river town at the foot of Sequoia National Forest. Founder Kyle Smith, a dedicated homebrewer, wrote the business plan, found the space and lined up the money, and aimed for a relaxed, family-friendly pub that fit the town.
The brewery made its name with the Citra Double IPA, which started as a dry-hopping experiment and drew attention well beyond the valley. Smith has since moved on from the brewery.
How it's made
The house style leans on heavy hopping and dry-hop blends such as Citra and Amarillo, with caramel malts kept low so the hops come through. The lineup also includes easy-drinking beers like the Isabella Blonde and a nitro stout.
I just can't get away from using a lot of hops.
Why we carry them
We like Kern River for California IPA with real hop character. The Citra Double IPA is the one to try first.
