Their story

Kikkerland Design began on a houseboat on the Hudson River, off Manhattan's Upper West Side. Founder Jan van der Lande, who grew up partly in the Netherlands, had worked at a SoHo design shop and started representing independent designers. In 1992 he incorporated a company to bring Dutch design to New York, often delivering orders by bike.

The name is a Dutch nickname for the Netherlands, roughly frog land, a nod to how often it rains there.

Over the years Kikkerland moved from importing Dutch work to producing its own collection with designers from many countries. It is known for small, witty pieces like wind-up toys, flip clocks and kitchen tools, and one early bowl design entered MoMA's permanent collection.

How it's made

Kikkerland works with independent designers worldwide and manages production itself, with a small in-house design team developing new items. Products are designed to be useful and fun at an accessible price.

It is important for us that products designers feel comfortable and appreciated in our collection.
