Their story
Ancho Reyes comes from Puebla City in central Mexico, a region known for its poblano chiles. The liqueur is based on a 1927 recipe from Puebla, and it was brought to market in 2013 by Casa Lumbre Spirits.
A green version, Ancho Reyes Verde, followed in 2016. In 2019 Campari Group bought a controlling stake in the brand along with Montelobos mezcal, and Campari now distributes it.
How it's made
The original liqueur uses late-harvest poblano chiles that are sun-dried for two to three weeks, turning them into ancho chiles. The Verde adds early-harvest poblanos that are fire-roasted for a brighter, greener flavor. Both are produced in Puebla.
Why we carry them
We love a splash of Ancho Reyes for adding gentle heat and smoky depth to margaritas and spirit-forward drinks. It is also lovely on its own over ice.
