Their story
Francesco D'Onofrio founded Marchesi de' Cordano in 2000, drawing on his grandfather's farming know-how. He began with the first 12 hectares of the historic Santa Caterina estate in Loreto Aprutino, in the hills of Abruzzo at the foot of the Maiella mountains.
The estate has since grown to about 50 hectares, and its winery opened in 2011. Its best-known wines include Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
How it's made
Vines are trained both on the traditional Abruzzo pergola and on low spurred cordon, planted at about 5,000 vines per hectare for concentrated fruit. All grapes come from the estate's own hillside vineyards and are made into wine at the cellar in Loreto Aprutino.
Why we carry them
We like Marchesi de' Cordano for honest Montepulciano that's ready for a weeknight pasta. It's a good reminder of how much Abruzzo offers.
