Their story
Matías Riccitelli was born in Cafayate, a wine village in Argentina's far north, and grew up learning from his father, the winemaker Jorge Riccitelli. After working harvests around the world, he founded his own winery in 2009 in Las Compuertas, the highest part of Luján de Cuyo in Mendoza.
He has since added vineyards across the Uco Valley and, in 2015, a Patagonian project along the Río Negro, where vines planted in the 1950s grow cool-climate grapes like Pinot Noir and Semillon.
How it's made
The home vineyard in Las Compuertas holds old, ungrafted Malbec vines, and other sites reach above 1,500 meters in Gualtallary and the Uco Valley. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented only with native yeasts, with a light-handed approach in the cellar.
Why we carry them
We reach for Riccitelli when we want Malbec with more freshness and lift than usual. The Patagonia bottlings are worth exploring too.
