Their story

Phil Hughes served in the Peace Corps in Kenya and later worked with coffee farmers in Rwanda. He saw how much good fruit small farmers couldn't sell, and in 2011 he started Mavuno Harvest in Philadelphia to change that. Mavuno means "the first fruit of the season" in Swahili.

Building an import chain from scratch took most of the first year, and the first sale went to the Swarthmore Food Co-op in 2012. Today the company works with drying partners in Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Côte d'Ivoire, buying from dozens of small family farms.

How it's made

Partner facilities in Africa buy fresh organic fruit such as mango, pineapple, papaya and jackfruit from local farmers, dry it near where it was grown, and ship it to the US for packing. The fruit is certified organic, and the company has pursued fair trade certification to support the farmers and factory workers involved.

We're not just selling dried fruit. We're actually trying to do some good as well.
Phil Hughes, founder, to Keystone Edge (2015)

Why we carry them

We like Mavuno for a lunchbox snack that's simply fruit, with a supply chain that gives more back to the people who grow it.
