Their story
Mr Black was created by distiller Philip Moore of Distillery Botanica and designer and self-described coffee obsessive Tom Baker. They set out to bottle the flavor of Australia's cafe culture in a coffee liqueur that tastes more of coffee than of sugar.
The liqueur was released in 2013 and built a following with bartenders for espresso martinis. In 2022 the brand was acquired by Diageo.
How it's made
Mr Black is made from specialty-grade arabica beans from origins such as Papua New Guinea, Colombia and Kenya. The coffee is cold brewed and blended with Australian wheat vodka and sugar, and some special releases are aged in rum or mezcal casks.
We love the rich chocolate and cacao notes of medium and dark roast South American coffees
Why we carry them
If you make espresso martinis at home, this is the bottle we reach for. It's bold and not too sweet, and also great over ice cream.
