Their story
Nino Barraco farms near Marsala, at the western tip of Sicily, where his family has grown grapes for generations. For years they sold their wine in bulk to the big Marsala houses.
In 2004 Nino took over and began bottling under his own name. His vineyards spread across six small districts on the coastal plain, from sea level up to about 140 meters, and his Grillo, Catarratto and Zibibbo wines have built a following among natural wine drinkers.
How it's made
The vines are trained as low bush vines and farmed organically by hand, without irrigation or synthetic chemicals. Grapes are picked by hand, given a few days on the skins, and fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel. The wines are not fined or filtered, and only a small amount of sulfur is added after fermentation.
Why we carry them
Barraco's coastal whites are a good bottle for anyone exploring natural wine from Sicily, and they shine with seafood.
