Their story

Paolo Scavino is a family winery in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of Piedmont's Barolo zone. Today sisters Enrica and Elisa Scavino run the estate as the fourth generation, carrying on the work of their father, Enrico.

The family story starts in 1921, when Lorenzo Scavino began making wine here. The estate split between two branches of the family in 1943, and Enrico's father, Paolo, gave his name to this side. Enrico started working in the cellar full time as a boy of ten and went on to see more than 70 harvests before his death in 2024.

Enrico was one of the so-called Barolo Boys who reshaped the region's wines in the 1990s. In 1978 he and his father bottled Bric dël Fiasc, the family's first single-vineyard Barolo, and he spent decades adding top parcels to the family's holdings.

How it's made

Yields are kept low, and fruit from vines younger than about 15 years is sold off rather than bottled. Since 1993 the winery has used rotary fermenters, which shorten maceration to roughly a week or two. The Barolos spend about a year in French barriques, only part of them new, before finishing in large wooden casks.

We want to have the best from our vineyards and show the character of each cru and not too much oak.

Why we carry them

We like Scavino as a way to taste how much one village's vineyards can differ. Pour two of their crus side by side and the differences speak for themselves.
