Their story
Pielihueso is the project of Alejandro Bartolomé, a trained agronomist who shifted course in 2017 to grow grapes and make his own wine. He works alongside winemakers Sebastián Bisole and Celina Bartolomé.
Home is Los Chacayes, a subregion of Tunuyán in Mendoza's Uco Valley, with vineyards around 1,250 meters up in the foothills of the Andes. The team describes its goal simply as making fermented grape juice that reflects the fruit they have, rather than shaping wine to a formula.
How it's made
The vineyards grow on alluvial, stony soils and are farmed organically, with certification in progress. Fermentations start with native yeasts in stainless steel or concrete, and some wines, including a skin-contact white, age in Spanish clay amphorae. The wines are bottled with no added sulfites and only a light filtration.
Why we carry them
We love finding a new voice from Argentina, and Pielihueso shows a fresh, hands-off side of the Uco Valley. Try the skin-contact Naranjo if you are curious about orange wine.
