Their story
Champagne Pierre Gerbais is a family domaine in Celles-sur-Ource, a village in the Côte des Bar in Champagne's southern Aube. Aurélien Gerbais runs it today as the fourth generation, following his father Pascal and his grandfather Pierre, who bought most of the family's vineyards.
All 18 hectares sit around Celles-sur-Ource, planted mostly to Pinot Noir with Chardonnay and an unusual four hectares of Pinot Blanc. The family moved to organic farming in the 1990s, and in 2021 Aurélien reshaped the range around single-vineyard cuvées, each with a drawing of its site on the label.
How it's made
The vines are farmed organically with compost and raised canopies. Fermentations start from a native pied de cuve in stainless steel, and the wines rest on their lees for at least 30 months, with low sulfur at bottling. Reserve wines have been kept in a perpetual solera in oak demi-muids since 2011.
Why we carry them
We like Gerbais for showing how much character a grower can coax out of the Aube. The Pinot Blanc bottlings are a rare treat for anyone who thinks they know Champagne.
