Their story

Sagamore Spirit takes its name from Sagamore Farm, a historic horse farm about 30 minutes north of Baltimore owned by Under Armour founder Kevin Plank. Plank and his business partner Bill McDermott noticed the farm's spring water ran over limestone, and the idea of a Maryland rye followed.

Maryland was once a major rye state, with dozens of distilleries before Prohibition and the World Wars ended most of them. Sagamore started with whiskey distilled under contract in Indiana, then finished its own distillery in Baltimore in 2017.

How it's made

The distillery makes two rye mash bills, one high rye and one with some corn, and ferments, distills, and ages each separately before blending them. A 40-foot copper column still with two doublers does the main work. The small batch straight rye is now fully distilled in Maryland, replacing the Indiana whiskey the brand started with.

Why we carry them

We like Sagamore for anyone curious about Maryland rye, a style that is lighter and rounder than many spicier ryes. It is a handy bottle for a Manhattan.
