Their story
Santa Teresa rum is made at Hacienda Santa Teresa in El Consejo, in Venezuela's Aragua valley. The estate was established in 1796 by Count Martín Tovar y Ponte.
In 1885 Gustavo Julio Vollmer Ribas acquired the hacienda, and about a decade later he brought in stills from Germany and France. The distillery has run since 1896 and remains in the hands of the Vollmer family. Outside Venezuela, the brand is managed by Bacardi.
How it's made
Santa Teresa blends pot- and column-distilled rums. Its best-known bottling, 1796, was created for the hacienda's bicentenary and is aged using a solera system, where younger rum is blended into older barrels over time.
Why we carry them
We think the 1796 is one of the best-value aged rums out there. Sip it neat or use it in an Old Fashioned.
