Their story

Tamalitoz grew out of Sugarox Candy Studio, a small candy shop in Mexico City that made hard candy in small batches. It is owned and run by husbands Jack Bessudo, who has Mexican roots, and Declan Simmons, who is British.

The Mexico City shops closed during the pandemic, and the couple turned their focus to the United States, where the brand has grown quickly. They have said they hope to bring it back to Mexico.

How it's made

The candies started with traditional small-batch methods, including hand-cut rock candy and pillow-shaped pieces. Each one hides chili in the center, so the fruit comes first and the sour heat follows. Flavors have included watermelon, tamarind, chamoy and cucumber, made without artificial flavors or dyes.

Why we carry them

We love how these play sweet against spicy, just like a good chamoy snack. Try the tamarind if you like a little heat.
