Friulian winemaker who brought nearly lost local grapes back to life.

Their story
Emilio Bulfon makes wine in Valeriano, a village in the hills of Pordenone province in Friuli, in Italy's far northeast. His name is tied to an unusual mission: saving grape varieties that had all but disappeared from the region.
Working with the ampelographer Ruggero Forti, Bulfon tracked down old vines of Cividin, Cianorie, Cordenossa, Forgiarin, Piculit Neri, Sciaglin and Ucelut and replanted them. Today these rarities are grown in small amounts and bottled under his name, alongside Refosco and Moscato Rosa.
How it's made
The estate covers about 16 hectares around Pinzano al Tagliamento and Castelnovo del Friuli, with about nine under vine. Bulfon makes still wines from his rescued varieties as well as sparkling spumante, frizzante and grappa.
Why we carry them
We love pouring Bulfon for curious drinkers who think they have tried every grape. These are wines you will not find anywhere else.
