Their story

Woodblock Chocolate is the work of Charley and Jessica Wheelock, a husband-and-wife team in southeast Portland, Oregon. They made their first bars in their home kitchen in 2010 and grew into a small factory.

Early on Charley traveled to cacao farms in Trinidad, and those visits shaped how they buy. They work with small farms in the Caribbean and South America, through an importer friend who knows the growers well, and pay well above the commodity price.

How it's made

The Wheelocks and their small team do every step by hand, from sorting and roasting beans in a century-old roaster to cracking, winnowing, molding and wrapping. Chocolate is refined under stone wheels. Most bars are single origin and contain only cacao and sugar, sometimes with a sprinkle of coarse salt.

We're paying two to three times the commodity price.

Why we carry them

We like chocolate this simple, where two ingredients let the origin of the bean come through. Try two origins side by side and taste the difference.
