Their story

Wood's High Mountain Distillery is run by brothers P.T. and Lee Wood in Salida, a mountain town in central Colorado. The idea was P.T.'s, after years working as a river guide on the Colorado River. Lee came from a sales career and wanted to make something.

They have been at it for about a decade. Their range includes malt whiskeys, an American single malt, a rye, gin, vodka, a Colorado elderflower liqueur and canned cocktails, all poured in their Salida tasting room.

How it's made

The whiskeys are built on malted grain, much of it from the San Luis Valley through Proximity Malt, with cherry wood smoked malt and chocolate malt giving the house style. Fermentations run a long eight days, and the spirit is distilled on pot stills, including a German still from around 1880 nicknamed Ashley. Whiskey ages in new charred oak, where the brothers believe the dry air and big temperature swings at altitude speed maturation.

We started with an old German pot still, which was built roughly 1880 or so.

Why we carry them

We like how much character the smoked and chocolate malts bring to these whiskeys. They taste like nowhere else, which is the point.
