Their story

Askinosie Chocolate was started in Springfield, Missouri by Shawn Askinosie, who spent nearly two decades as a criminal defense attorney before turning to chocolate. He sold his first bar in 2007.

From the start he set out to work directly with cocoa farmers in Ecuador, the Philippines and Tanzania, visiting each year, sharing profits and opening the company's books to them. The company also helps run school lunch programs in the communities it buys from.

How it's made

Beans are bought directly from farmer groups at prices above fair trade levels, and each bar is traceable to a single origin. The Springfield team roasts, grinds and makes the chocolate in small batches, and Askinosie brings finished bars back so farmers can taste what their beans became.

I don't care what the size of your company is, you can make a difference,
Shawn Askinosie, founder, to The Christian Science Monitor (2014)

Why we carry them

Askinosie shows how much a small chocolate maker can do for the people who grow its cocoa. The single-origin dark bars are a great way to taste how different regions compare.
