Their story
Hermann Bahlsen, born in Hanover in 1859, saw industrial biscuit making while working in England and brought the idea home. In 1889 he took over a small factory in Hanover and started baking.
Two years later he launched the Leibniz butter biscuit, named for the city's most famous resident, the philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Bahlsen also coined the German word Keks from the English "cakes." The company is still family-owned and based in Hanover.
How it's made
Bahlsen was an early adopter of factory baking, bringing in assembly-line production in 1905. In 1904 it introduced its TET packaging, designed to keep biscuits safe from dust and moisture. Today it bakes cookies and cakes across several plants in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.
