Their story
Athletic Brewing Company grew out of Bill Shufelt's own search for a better drink. A former hedge fund trader and ultramarathon runner, he gave up alcohol in 2013 and found the non-alcoholic options flat and dull. He teamed up with John Walker, a head brewer from Santa Fe, and the two founded Athletic in Connecticut in 2017.
Their first beers, Run Wild IPA and Upside Dawn Golden Ale, came out of a small Stratford brewery in 2018. The company has since opened a large brewery in Milford, Connecticut and bought two former Ballast Point facilities in San Diego, and it became the top-selling non-alcoholic beer in U.S. grocery stores.
How it's made
Athletic uses its own brewing method that ferments the beer while keeping alcohol under 0.5 percent. According to the founders, nothing is stripped out after brewing, so the beer keeps its body and hop character.
