Their story
Barrell Craft Spirits was started in Louisville in 2013 by Joe Beatrice, who came to whiskey after careers in marketing and technology and years of brewing beer at home. He took his cue from the independent bottlers of Scotland, who buy casks from established distilleries and shape them into something of their own.
Rather than running stills, Barrell focuses on choosing and marrying barrels. The company has grown from small batch releases into a broad lineup of bourbons, ryes, and rums, and it has since opened a larger blending facility in the Louisville area to support that work.
How it's made
Barrell buys casks from distillers it knows well, in Kentucky and around the world, and brings them to its Kentucky facilities for further aging. The team then tastes through barrels, blends them in small batches, and bottles most releases at cask strength.
