Their story
Bichi is a family winery founded in 2014 by the Tellez family in the rocky hills outside Tecate, in Baja California. Noel Tellez left a law career to run it full time.
From the start, the family worked with Chilean natural wine pioneer Louis-Antoine Luyt, who pushed Noel to seek out century-old plantings of Mision, the grape Spanish missionaries brought to the region. The winery also buys fruit from growers in the Valle de Guadalupe and nearby valleys.
How it's made
Bichi farms about 10 hectares biodynamically, much of it old, own-rooted vines that are dry-farmed. Grapes are destemmed by hand, foot-trodden and fermented with wild yeast in concrete, amphorae and clay tinajas. The wines are unfined and unfiltered, with very little added sulfur.
Why we carry them
We love Bichi for showing what Mexican wine can taste like when old vines are left to speak. The reds are light, juicy and easy to chill.
