Their story
Bodega Gaintza belongs to the Lazkano family of Getaria, a fishing town on the Basque coast facing the Cantabrian Sea. Andrés Lazkano started the estate in 1923, selling small amounts of txakoli from vines near his farmhouse to neighboring towns.
The family is now in its fifth generation of winemakers and helped pioneer the Getariako Txakolina appellation. The name Gaintza means "on top of" in the local dialect, a nod to the winery's perch above the rocky shoreline. In recent years the family also opened a rural hotel on the property.
How it's made
The family farms about 25 hectares of vines averaging 40 years old on limestone and clay, cooled by sea breezes. Hondarrabi Zuri leads, with Hondarrabi Beltza and Gros Manseng. The wines ferment in temperature-controlled steel, rest on their lees for months, and are bottled young to keep a light natural spritz.

A wine presents a pale yellow hue with a subtle greenish tint along the edges of the glass. Its light, bright color is visually appealing.

Why we carry them
We think txakoli is one of the great summer wines, and Gaintza is a classic example. It is bright, salty and lightly sparkling, made for seafood.
