Their story

Birzeit Brewery was founded in 2013 by brothers Alaa, Khalid and Aziz Sayej in Birzeit, a town just north of Ramallah. It is the second craft brewery in the Palestinian territories, after Taybeh.

Its Shepherds Beer went on sale in 2015. Getting there took patience: officials first rejected the shepherd label, and it took months to win approval. Since 2017 the brewery has hosted its own Shepherds Beer Festival, and its beer now travels to Italy, Chile and the United States.

How it's made

The core range is a Czech-style pilsner, an English-style amber ale and an Irish stout, plus a seasonal wheat beer made with berries from nearby farms. The brewery recycles water with its own treatment system, collects rainwater, and has grown hops in small quantities for special batches.

Why we carry them

We are glad to stock a beer with this much heart behind it. The pilsner is crisp and easy, and the stout has real depth.
