Their story
Heirloom Coffee Roasters is the Oakland company started by Hovik Azadkhanian, who comes from a family that has roasted coffee for three generations. He grew up around roasting drums and brought that background to a new kind of business.
He launched Heirloom in 2021 out of worry about the future of coffee farming. With climate pressure mounting on growing regions, he built the company around farms that work to rebuild their soil rather than wear it down.
How it's made
Heirloom focuses on coffee from farms with Regenerative Organic Certification, a standard that looks at soil health, animal welfare and fair treatment of workers. Beans are roasted in Oakland on electric roasters instead of gas-fired machines. The team calls its roast style Culinary Roast, aiming to bring out the natural sweetness in each coffee.
