Their story
Soul Chai is the work of Sally Burgess, who had been making chai for years before turning her recipe into a small Portland, Oregon brand. Her goal was a chai with real intensity and warmth that anyone could make at home.
The company sells its blends as shelf-stable powders in tins. There are two core flavors: a black tea Masala Chai and a caffeine-free Rooibos Masala Chai with an earthier profile.
How it's made
Soul Chai is a powdered blend of tea and spices, so there is no steeping or straining. The Masala Chai uses a black tea base with a strong lean toward cardamom and ginger, while the rooibos version swaps in naturally caffeine-free red bush tea. Burgess suggests steaming it with milk and sweetening with honey or simple syrup.
Our original Masala Chai has a black tea base, featuring strong notes of cardamom and ginger with a lingering spice.
