Their story
Badia a Coltibuono sits in Gaiole in Chianti, in an abbey founded by Vallombrosan monks in the 11th century. The monks made wine here for centuries and built up large holdings until the monastery was secularized in 1810 and its lands were sold at auction.
The Stucchi Prinetti family has owned the estate since 1846 and is now in its sixth generation. Emanuela Stucchi Prinetti runs the winery with her three brothers.
How it's made
The estate farms about 50 hectares of organically grown vines. Its wines are aged mostly in large casks so the oak stays in the background, with a careful mix of new and used barrels for the small-barrel wines. The Vin Santo is made from Trebbiano and Malvasia.
Why we carry them
We love Coltibuono's Vin Santo with biscotti at the end of a meal. It is a taste of one of Chianti's oldest wine estates.
