Their story
Ashes & Diamonds is the Napa Valley winery of Kashy Khaledi, who came to wine from a career in multimedia and advertising. Its home in the Oak Knoll district is a mid-century modern building designed by architect Barbara Bestor, and the tasting room opened in 2017.
The first vintages, starting in 2014, were made with Steve Matthiasson and Dan Petroski, and Diana Snowden Seysses joined the team from 2015. The winery looks back to the leaner, lower-alcohol Napa wines of the 1960s and 70s for inspiration.
How it's made
The estate vineyard is planted mainly to Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and the winery also buys fruit from respected growers such as the Araujo family's Red Hen and Rancho Pequeño vineyards. Production is small, around 6,000 cases a year, with an emphasis on moderate alcohol and freshness.
Why we carry them
Ashes & Diamonds is a good reminder that Napa red can be lively and restrained. We like the Rouge as a weeknight bottle that still feels special.
