Their story
Avinyó is the Esteve family's winery in the Penedès, centered on their farmhouse, Can Fontanal. Today four siblings run it, carrying on work that started long before cava made the region famous.
The family once grew cereals and legumes and made a little wine on the side. When phylloxera wiped out their vines in the late 1800s, and a bank panic took their savings, Joan Esteve Marcè went to France for resistant rootstock and replanted. His successor, Joan Esteve Nadal, brought the first tractor to the Penedès in 1957 and replanted with the local grapes xarel-lo, parellada and macabeu.
How it's made
Avinyó works only with grapes from its own estate vineyards, which is uncommon among cava houses. The wines are built on the traditional Penedès varieties xarel-lo, parellada and macabeu, and the range also includes a lightly sparkling Petillant.
