Their story
Jason Jackson started Axe and the Oak in Colorado Springs in 2013, joined at launch by Casey Ross and Eric Baldini, with friends chipping in as investors. The name nods to Prohibition-era agents who carried axes to break up stills and oak barrels.
The distillery works out of a small production space under 4,000 square feet, and pours at the Axe and the Oak Whiskey House inside the historic Ivywild School. It has since grown beyond Colorado, buying a building in Fort Smith, Arkansas, in 2022 and co-owning a distillery in Texas.
How it's made
For its first four years the team distilled all of its whiskey on site, then added blending to keep up with demand. The lineup includes Colorado Mountain Bourbon, an Incline Rye, a wheat vodka and a Citra gin, along with regular barrel-finish releases and barrels traded with neighboring producers.

We like Axe and the Oak for a bourbon with a clear Colorado story behind it. It makes a solid house Old Fashioned.
